About Thodeekkalam Temple

Thodeekkalam is the place in Kannur district in Kerala state. This is beautiful place. This place is in Chittariparamba village. Thodeekkalam Siva temple is famous for mural paintings. These are 17th century paintings. The main images are gods and representation of Hindu stories. There is a myth about this temple. Once there was a merchant and a son. The boy had a fate that he will die in his sixteenth age. When he was sixteenth, a snake came to bit him. He ran and reached in Thodeekkalam temple and fall at the foot of lord Siva. The snake could not chase the boy any more. Lord Siva saved the boy. After that, the boy’s father promised that in every year in the same date he will give rice to the temple. The way through the rise is bought to the temple is known as Ariperiya( the way of rice). The place has historical relevance. Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja was a believer of lord Siva in Thodeekkalam Temple….

The wall of the temple is painted with mural arts. The paints used for painting is made of some rare plant leaves. Pazhassi Raja (otherwise known as Keralasimham) had visited here frequently. He believed that Lord Thodeekkalam Sree Siva and goddess SreePorkali were his supreme Gods. Since the old paintings were ruined a group of lovers of art initiated the innovation task. Publicity regarding the matter was so great that outstanding personalities in mural arts came prepared. Now the arts have been retouched and refreshed. A well set up swimming pool is an outstanding asset of this temple. A committee for the innovation work is still on.
